Belgian school, Portrait – Original oil painting, 1930's, signed René De Pauw, titled 'Heist'
This tantalizing portrait is a work by the acclaimed Belgian artist René De Pauw (1887-1956), well listed artist with continually rising auction prices (e.g. Christie's Amsterdam June 2007). It is painted on hardboard, signed by the artist and set in an elegant period frame.
A typical work of the Belgian school of this period. Its author, born in Bruges, moved to Brussels after the first world war while making frequent excursions to the Belgian coast where he cherished subjects as port scenes, café interiors and portraits. De Pauw has decorated several public buildings and his work is present in national musea.
