Looking Back, original oil painting by Tang Hai Guo
Tang's animal paintings are allegorical, representing all of the simple Chinese country folk who have migrated to cities to try to make a better living for themselves and their families, back home in the home villages. Usually, he includes a city skyline, off in the distance, as in this painting. That, too, is part of the symbolism, showing how far many of those new city dwellers really are from the city, even though they are living in it: the disconnections.
He's an older dog, now, and with age comes growing loyalty and commitment. But, now and then, colorful bubbles will float by, acting as portals to the past, and they take him back to his carefree youth.
