James Abbott McNeill Whistler's The Doctor - Portrait of my Brother is an original lithograph printed upon smooth wove paper as published by The Pageant in 1896. No further impressions or restrikes were issued. Perhaps more than any other field of Whistler's art, the lithographs provide the most intimate and personal approach. Many depict informal studies of models in the studio, scenes of everyday, outdoor life and portraits of friends and relations. The Doctor - Portrait of my Brother portrays Doctor William Whistler who served in the American Civil War as a confederate surgeon under General Lee. William Whistler later practiced medicine in both London and Paris. James McNeill Whistler created this magnificent, informal portrait of his brother when he was treating the artist's wife's illness. The Doctor - Portrait of my Brother was commissed in 1895 for the 1896 number of the arts and literary annual, The Pageant. Its art editor was Charles Hazelwood Shannon and its literary editor was J. W. Gleeson White.
