About the Artwork
Artist: Léopold Robin (1877-1939)

Subject: La Porte de la Craffe in Nancy, France

This is one of a series of etchings of buildings in Nancy, executed by Robin.

A very fine example of architectural drawing of the late 19th / early 20th century – this is of the Craffe gate. I do not know the exact date (Robin was 33 in 1900) so it could have been done in either century,

The intaglio edge of this original etching is clear and the etching is complete. The etching is signed in the image and in pencil by Robin just outside the intaglio edge and titled bottom left in pencil 'Nancy, La Porte de la Craffe'. The etching is framed in an ebonised frame. It does not have an outside mount. The etching is clean with one tiny mark on the border. There is marginal age creaming.

The Craffe Gateway (excerpts from the Office de Tourisme Nancy):

This impressive gateway into Nancy was built at the end of the 14th century as part of the walls encircling the town. The large twin towers flanking the gate were added on at the end of the 15th century and were used as prisons. The small lantern above the main gate dates back to the 17th century and contained a bell, which rang out the hours of the day, the beginning of the curfew and informed the population of public executions. The Lorraine Cross on the facade is a reminder that the emblem was adopted after the victory of the Battle of Nancy
